I spend a lot of time planning all of my yoga classes, especially my classes for children. Maybe because of my background in Elementary Education I feel more comfortable if I have a written out lesson plan. For my kids classes I like to base them around a theme, usually based on what is happening on the calendar. This week we of course incorporated Father's Day into our lesson.
My Daddy is a Pretzel by the world- renowned yoga teacher Baron Baptiste fit the bill perfectly. The book is very sweet and my students loved it.
"Today, in class we're going to say what jobs our parents do each day. Niki says her mommy's a gardener. Sometimes, my daddy's a tree."
The next page of the book gives instructions for how to do Vrksasana (tree pose). The book continues in this fashion. One kids dad is a vet which then leads to "sometimes my daddy's a dog and and instructions for Adho Mukha Svanasana(downward dog). We read the story and did each of the asanas(poses) mentioned in the book. At the end of class I had each of the students make a card for their dad by writing (or drawing, I have some young ones) what they love best about their dad. The kids enjoyed class and I was very happy to have the perfect book to share with them in honor of father's. May we all take this weekend to honor the good men in our lives. Until next time, love and lollipops.
