Book Review: Meditations From the Mat
I've always tried to do some sort of daily devotional or small reading to kind of give me a focus for the day, however it wasn't until I discovered Rolf Gates fabulous book Meditations from the Mat that I actually have been able to stick with it. There is a short reading for each day on an aspect of yoga from the yamas to the niyamas to pratyahara (turning inward) to dhyana (effortless attention). Each reading starts with a quote by perhaps Gandhi or even Bob Dylan and then leads you into the short lesson for the day. I've really learned a lot and also become much more aware about myself and my habits. It is slowly helping me peel away the layers of normal human yucky pettiness to reveal the beautiful layers of divinity that we all have inside of ourselves. I usually try to keep the book in my car so I can read it in car line when I'm waiting to pick my daughter up from school. I feel like I need to have a copy in every room of my house so I can easily get to it. One of the things I like best about the book is that the author admits his own imperfections and human yucky pettiness. Even though he is this amazing teacher he too has days that are filled with rushing around and bad attitude. Great book, I highly recommend it and as you know Mother's Day is coming up so buy a copy for the yoga momma in your life. PS: mine is a borrowed copy, I'm just saying!! Until next time dear friends, love and lollipops.
