Book Review: Poser; My Life in 23 Yoga Poses

I believe if you put what you want out into the universe, that the universe responds accordingly. I've put out to the universe that I want to fully support myself and my children by teaching yoga. I'm eating, sleeping, breathing yoga right now and it's even reflected in my fun reading. As you get to know me through this blog you will soon learn I'm a huge reader. Right now I have the pleasure of reading Poser; My Life in 23 Yoga Poses by Claire Dederer. If you've spent your whole life trying to be a good daughter, a good wife, a good friend, a good mom, good to the Earth  etc you will find a kindred spirit in Ms. Dederer. After injuring her back nursing her very healthy, chubby baby, Ms. Dederer reluctantly decides to take up yoga to heal herself from the inside out. Well suffice it to say, they had her at Namaste!!

"Here (yoga studio) was a place where someone would tell me what to do, and there were identifiable results. Unlike motherhood, where the rules seemed to shift all the time and the standards seemed as high as the moon." (page 16)

Being a mom, especially being a mom who has separated from her husband, I'm constantly feeling not good enough. Even on the days where you feel like you've done a pretty good job, something will happen to remind you that being a good mom is the biggest, scariest most uncertain job on the planet. Even though I've done yoga in bits and pieces my entire adult life, I didn't get serious about my practice until the anxiety of motherhood tried to push me over the edge. If you haven't stepped out into your own yoga adventure yet, step out with Ms. Dederer. Poser is a thoughtful, honest and reflective account of what it means to be a mom, a wife and a clumsy beginner yoga student. 23 poses later she has made you laugh, cry and think about your own perfectionist tendencies. Until next time friends, love and lollipops.
